Into The Heavens

Into The Heavens
These two photographs (this and the next) are like a gift.

I’ve been VERY busy lately. In fact, these past few weeks I have been inhumanly busy. My children finally sat me down last night and explained the value of a dead-of-a-heart-attack mother to them.

Apparently limited.

So today I drove wildly along the prairie on dusty country roads with my daughter in her stereo’d to the max jalopy affectionately known as Jane. We sang to Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Tragically Hip at the top of our lungs, dranks cokes and ate junk food which we picked out of a giant plastic bag that cost $48 at the Stop and Go.

We stopped to take pictures and once just because it was so pretty and thus we forgot to take pictures. We had a GRAND time.

Then the other child came over and we got take out food and sat around and he talked about guitars and I talked about cherrywood and after we sat in the garden and watched the clouds turn into tornado shapes.

"I ate too many quesadillas," my son said.

"Yah," I replied, "I think cherrywood is best."

"You know," he leaned back until the chair creaked, "I could reallyuse a new guitar."

"Uh huh. Mind you, I’ve seen it done with hickory, too."

"I saw one today. A Martin. I was thinking … hey, there’s the CTV balloon!"

He pointed up and I followed his finger with my eyes.

Well, I had to RUN into the house and find a camera, still packed in my camera bag from that afternoon, put a card in it, RUN back outside and out the back gate and through the neighbor’s backyard where I hurtled a plastic workbench, and skipped out through their gate and down the back alley …

… where I am, by this time, going "ouch, ouch, ouchie, ouch, ouchie" as my barefeet connect with the asphalt in the alley …

…but you know…

…the thing is getting away …

By the time I reach the corner where the newspaper boxes are I had an audience of a small pickup basketball team and two little old ladies standing still in the middle of the lane, wondering what the hell I was doing ….

… besides acting crazy, I mean …

And so I leapt two tall buildings … uh … okay, I didn’t leap any buildings. But I did manage to get around the corner in time to set up and wait for the balloon to get into the beam of light breaking through the north clouds.

All the way home, too, "ouch, ouch, ouchie, ouch, ouchie."

But I was smiling.
